Sources: Coronado Next ‘Striders Fan Favorite to Be Dealt; Heading to Tempe

The Florida Farstriders have continued their recent pattern of moving big name players as the team is expected to trade outfielder Pedro Coronado to the Tempe Apollos in a deal for three players and two draft picks. The trade is centered on outfielder Isacco Magnaldi and sources have reported that left-hander Jack Ring and outfielder Jacob Gill are also expected to come to Florida in the deal.

The price to acquire Coronado, 29, could prove costly for the Apollos, who will send one of last year’s top international prospects to Florida in order to acquire him (rankings via Baseball News Network). Beyond that, Gill has been manning left field and Jack Ring has been a bullpen contributor in Tempe this season.

Coronado is fresh off a season in which he batted .266/.357/.473 with 30 homers and 112 RBI in his third All-Star campaign. This year, he’s batting .268/.321/.480 with 7 HR in 140 plate appearances. The Apollos figure to put him into the starting lineup in Right Field, where his great arm should also continue to add value. In his Farstriders career, he won the Wunderkind Award in 2032 and was named an All-Star three times in his time in Florida. He leaves behind a cult following and 186 HR, 595 RBI, and 32.4 WAR in his six Farstriders seasons.

As for Florida General Manager Jay Amado, he’s made his splash in the last few weeks, trading fan favorite after fan favorite as he goes about restocking the minor league system and optimizing the Farstriders payroll. He bolstered the youth within the organization by a staggering amount in a span of just a couple weeks as he added RHP Jorge Gallegos, RHP Jose Picaluga, and LF Robby Rollins in addition to 25-year-old major leaguer Robert Tall in the blockbuster Luppe van Dam trade with the Ghosts. With 2B Michael Roberts set to cash in during his upcoming arbitration years, these deals have also allowed the Farstriders to cut upwards of $60 million in payroll this year and an additional $60-70 million in 2039.

Magnaldi ranks as the #21 prospect in baseball, via BNN, which rates the 18-year-old Argentinian’s contact and ability to put the ball in the gaps as potentially elite. The 6’3” 195 lb. outfielder already has elite speed as well. He signed a league-high $22,000,000 deal to join the Apollos’ international complex just last year. Magnaldi has a long way to go before he will be close to scratching the surface of his potential and will likely see his service time counter begin in rookie ball this year.

Gill is lesser known than Coronado, but brings a “lite” version of the same skillset to Florida. He has accumulated 181 plate appearances this year, batting .253/.331/.380 with 13 extra base hits. The 6’6” 27-year-old batted .247/.335/.416 last season with 20 HR and 62 RBI to finish with 2.0 WAR. He is expected to move to right field and platoon with red-hot hitting rookie Melvin James for the rest of this season. Gill’s contract pays him $950k this year and $1.7 million in 2039—a steep drop from the $14 million that Coronado will earn in each of the next four years before having two years of team options in 2042 and 2043.

26-year-old left-hander Jack Ring is in the midst of his second professional season after a debut year that saw him go 7-3 with 9 saves, a WHIP of 1.04 and an ERA of 2.93 in 76.2 innings pitched across 57 games. He has struggled to a 4.15 ERA this year, but the Florida front office was intrigued by the 6’1” pitcher’s game, nevertheless. The ‘tweener can play either from the bullpen or as a spot starter, with an impressive array of pitches that includes a 95+ MPH fastball in addition to a devastating changeup that he turns to as his “out pitch” as well as a strong curveball and cutter that he can turn to for movement. The organization is reluctant to call up recently-acquired Jorge Gallegos or Leon Zamora to come from the bullpen this year, so we’ll likely see Ring fill-in in the back of the bullpen if recently-claimed Jose Ortiz continues to struggle.

Lastly, the Farstriders picked up a couple of latter-half 4th round draft picks in the deal. While not likely to lead to stars, these are the types of picks that Amado refers to as the “team builder” rounds. The opportunity to pick up players who become the key role players and fringe talents that allow you to build organizational depth. Whether that will lead to anything this year remains to be seen, but there are several top players and top prospects in the league who were also selected in the 4th.
