The Calexico Reins got a stellar effort from pitcher Mario Mercalo, helping Calexico score a win over the visiting San Luis Rio Colorado Rapidos Blancos, 5-1. Mercalo, now 2-1, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 6, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. Javier Torres picked up the save for Calexico, his 6th of the year.
Lewis MacPhee had a big solo home run for the Reins in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Calexico leading 2-1 and the bases empty, he sized up a fastball from 23-year old right-handed pitcher Toshiharu Eida and punished it. The result was his 4th home run of the season, which put the Reins on top, 3-1.
"It's always nice to be on the winning side," MacPhee told the Calexico Gazette. "But we take nothing for granted."
With the loss, San Luis Rio Colorado is 10-10.
