The Utrecht Scholars in 14 innings beat the Fort Wayne Pioneers, 1-0, at Utrecht Park. Starting pitcher Craig Hurley was a major factor, holding his opponents in check all game. The second-place Scholars improved to 50-37.
The decisive blow was delivered in the bottom of the 14th when Ed Stevens hit a solo home run off 24-year old right-handed pitcher Aaron Spencer to win the game for Utrecht. The home crowd went wild.
During his postgame press conference, Scholars manager Lou Cunningham told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
