Bears Slip Past Portsmouth, 4-3

The Birmingham Bears faced a tough opponent in Portsmouth pitcher Howard Nelson, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Ballpark of Birmingham by a final score of 4-3. Nelson went 6 innings and allowed no runs. Birmingham is now 36-38.
The defining moment came in the bottom of the ninth for Birmingham. That's when Mark Larkin hit a run-scoring double off 21-year old right-handed pitcher Toichi Ikeda to win the game. The home crowd went wild.
Larkin attributed the win to his team's "focus and intensity."
