Rapid City starter Phil Hannay kept the Birmingham offense from doing much damage. The left-hander leaned on his forkball in leading the Rushmores to a 3-1 win. Walter Taylor picked up the save for Rapid City, his 13th of the year. The Rushmores improved their record to 41-27 with the win over Birmingham.

Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for José Franco? The 23-year old right fielder Franco stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put Rapid City up, 1-0. For the game, he was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.

"Bottom line," said Birmingham skipper Charles Jeffries, "we didn't play well enough to win."
