Fort Wayne got a first-rate effort from pitcher Fernando Vega, who frustrated Kingston hitters en route to a 2-1 Pioneers triumph at Jamaica National Baseball Park. Vega, now 1-0, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 2 hits, while striking out 7, walking 2, and allowing 1 run. Tyler Magor recorded the save, his 1st.
Fort Wayne used the timely hitting of Brian Gonzáles to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Pioneers on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Tough loss," said Kingston manager Edward Cooley. "Tough one to swallow."
The Pioneers, at 25-28, inhabit third place in the Amber Waves League Stars and Stripes.
