In a low-scoring affair between the Niigata Gigans and the Yokohama Plumbers, pitcher Steve Erwin was the difference between victory and defeat. The Niigata right-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 3-2 Gigans win. With the loss, Yokohama drops to 6-5.

Leonard Ryan went 2 for 5 with a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for Niigata. The 24-year old first baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring ground out off Samuel Garrison. It was his 7th RBI of the season.

"The fact of the matter is that we had a shot to win," said losing manager Nobukazu Tanaka.
