The Newport News Anchormen defeated the Akron Ambers, 8-5, in Appalachian Mountain League action at Great Lakes Field. Newport News pitcher Mark Stanford had a standout performance. The win gives Newport News a season record of 63-61.

Newport News relied on the bat of Edward Frawley to get the win. The left fielder ripped a 2-run triple in the top of the first inning to put the Anchormen ahead, 4-0. For the game, Frawley had 1 double and 1 triple in 4 at-bats.

"Really good pitchers have that ability to raise their game when they need to," said Newport News manager Naoki Suzuki.
