The Raleigh El Dorados topped the Joplin Red Racers, 4-3, in Appalachian Mountain League action at El Dorado Field. The standout performance belonged to Raleigh pitcher and Santa Ana, El Salvador, native José Mendoza. Mendoza got the win, improving to 2-2. He gave up 9 hits and walked 1 over 7.1 innings. He allowed 3 runs. Mitsuo Kikuchi picked up the save for Raleigh, his 1st of the year.

Tracy Ramírez had a big 2-run home run for the El Dorados in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Raleigh leading 2-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a fastball from Bartolo Torres, who is tied for 6th in the AML in strikeouts with 35, and punished it. The result was his 9th home run of the season, which put the El Dorados on top, 4-0.

"José's as tough as he is talented," said Raleigh manager Ralph Gunther.

No one expected much of this team, but the hot start by Raleigh might have some re-evaluating their pre-season predictions. This latest win lifts their record to 16-9.
