Their bats were silent and Mokule'ia had a rookie on the mound. No problem.

On a day when the Oceanic struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 21-year-old starter Héctor Cortéz. The right-hander quieted the Ewa Beach Imperialists at Lost Island Ballpark to help Mokule'ia take the 3-2 decision and seize a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-7 Championship.

Mokule'ia took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Joe Page hit a clutch 2-run home run to bring Oceanic fans to their feet.

"Héctor made his pitches," said Mokule'ia manager Pedro Ferringo.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Lost Island Ballpark in Mokuleia.
