The Niigata Gigans started the Championship in style, downing the visiting Grand Rapids Rafters at Gigans Ballpark by a score of 6-4 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Gigans right-hander Steve Erwin threw 7.0 innings allowing 3 runs.

The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Ichiro Ishida came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Grand Rapids pitcher Brant Haines, he hit a 2-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Niigata on top, 4-3.

"We lost," Grand Rapids manager Alberto Flores said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Gigans Ballpark in Niigata.
