Their bats were silent and Anchorage had a rookie on the mound. No problem.

On a day when the Mighty Moose struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 22-year-old starter Pepe Sánchez. The right-hander quieted the Homer Wallbangers at Lions Ballpark to help Anchorage take the 3-1 decision and seize a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Wild Card.

Sánchez was effective for Anchorage, seldom allowing the Wallbangers to square up a pitch. The right-hander tossed 110 pitches over 7.2 innings. He limited Homer to just 1 run on 3 hits.

"I felt we were ready to go," said Anchorage manager Jason Meléndez. "Our pregame was pretty good."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Lions Ballpark in Homer.
