In a low-scoring contest between the Kobayashi Fireflies and the Mauna Loa Vulcans, William Cooper, who is tied for 5th in the HL with a 9.6 K/9 rate, proved to be the difference. The Kobayashi right-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-0 Fireflies win. Cooper, now 5-4, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 1 hit, while striking out 2, walking 5, and allowing no runs. Albert Hayes was credited with the save for Kobayashi, his 10th of the season.
Kobayashi used a well-timed hit by Glen Joseph to capture the win. The second baseman socked a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Fireflies ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.
Cooper told the Kobayashi Daily News: "I don't know which I enjoy more -- being a ballplayer or the perks that come with being a ballplayer."
The Fireflies now have a mark of 34-30.
