Mexicali pitcher Guy Besemer did his part in helping his team beat the Tijuana Saguaros, 4-1. The right-hander kept opposing batters from doing too much damage. Besemer yielded 1 run over 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. His record improves to 9-1. Picking up his 24th save was 23-year old right-handed pitcher Jelle Middehof.
Bill Thornton had a big grand slam home run for the Shmoes in the bottom of the first inning. With Mexicali trailing 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a changeup from 21-year old left-handed pitcher Rafael Gutiérrez and swatted a home run to left-center. It was his 3rd home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Shmoes ahead, 4-1.
In postgame remarks, Besemer hailed his team's "single-minded determination."
With the win over Tijuana, the Shmoes improved to 51-33.
