Vargas Helps Lakers Beat Gigans, 9-7
|
Getting offensive support from Alfredo Vargas, the Racine Lakers topped the Niigata Gigans, 9-7. Vargas went 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 4 for the Lakers. The winner was Juan Álvarez, who threw 98 pitches over 5.2 innings. The right-hander was charged with 2 runs on 5 hits. The Lakers sit in third place in the Rocky Mountain League North with a record of 37-36.
With Racine leading 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Vargas came up to bat against Niigata pitcher Bartolo Flores. Vargas hit a changeup to right-center for a 3-run home run. His 9th home run of the season put the Lakers on top, 9-2.
"We put it together today and came out with the win," Vargas said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."
