The Mauna Loa Vulcans began the 2042 season with a convincing 14-1 win over the Kilauea Volcanoes at Recoil Stadium. Most impressive was Mauna Loa first baseman William MacKay, who hit 2 home runs. He scored 4 runs and drove in 2. Luis Miranda, the winning pitcher, is now 1-0. He went 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 7 hits, while fanning 10 and walking 1.

Bernd Speck was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 4 runs for Mauna Loa. The 22-year old catcher had a key at-bat in the bottom of the second. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring walk off Xiong Lok. It was his 1st walk of the season.
