Marshall got a terrific game from designated hitter Lewis MacPhee. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Michigan, 3-2. MacPhee went 1-1 with a home run. Michigan reliever Gabriel Long was credited with the win, to go to 1-0. William O'Neil took the loss for Marshall. Picking up the save was Will Orr, his 6th.
Michigan used the timely hitting of Scotty Reed to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Red Dawns on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We came out on the wrong end of this one," said Marshall skipper Jiro Heida.
The Red Dawns now have a mark of 16-20.
