Underground: News & Notes

4/26/2009: London, UK We’ve been hearing rumors about this for awhile now, but it seems that Robert Collins injured himself before Spring Training breakdancing.  Here is Collins’ version of the story:  “Yeah, I was back in my hometown of Apollo Beach and I met up with my old friend B-boy Junior.  He was egging me on, telling me I had lost a step.  You know, we used to be the two best breakers out there.  Well, needless to say, I had to show him I still had it.  It was going great until I tried some one-armed push-ups and I felt a pop and that was it.”  This unfortunate injury really hurt the already thin pitching staff of London.  Here’s to a full recovery.  We will look forward to seeing him next season.

London pulled off an interesting trade right before the season, dealing Simon Yates, José Díaz and London’s 6th round pick to Bakersfield for outfielder Rémi Young and Bakersfield’s 6th rounder.  Rémi has struggled somewhat in the new season, hitting .250 with little power.  When asked, Rémi responded, “You know, it’s been real hard for me to get used to the travel this team does.  It seems we are flying across the Atlantic every few days and it’s wearing on me.  I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but being on the same continent as the rest of the league would be nice.”

Newly acquired Anthony Cox has been a nice little surprise so far in London.  The lefty is sporting a 1.74 ERA and threw a 2-hit shutout against Manchester this last Thursday.

Despite the acquisitions of Rémi Young and Rex Groves, the London offense is still struggling mightily.  There are some rumors that the front office is already looking to make a few moves, possibly calling up Lorenzo Sandoval or Jonathan Cook to provide a boost.

Rafael Hernández is finally back after tearing his triceps muscle last June.  In honor of his being back, everyone in the right field bleachers has taken to singing “Sunglasses at Night” by Corey Hart whenever he comes out to pitch.  Word is that, during his time off, Rafael would try to go out and enjoy the London nightlife.  His popularity made it so he started using a wig and sunglasses to try and hide his identity.  It obviously didn’t work.

West Virginia Nailed it!!!

Today the West Virginia Alleghenies decided to revamp some of their coaches in the minor leagues.  That included firing pitching Jorge Aguilar from Maine (AA) and then promoting both David Sánchez and Akio Sai.  Doing that left an opening for a new pitching coach in Aruba (R).  While some thought that the team would go […]
