The Gloucester Fishermen Minor Leagues Affiliates Get a Makeover
Details of the design changes for the Gloucester Fishermen Triple A and Single A affiliates have been announced.
Designer Philine Plotske explains, “Both team’s uniforms bored me to death. The Browns might as well have had the team names scribbled on and the number two on every jersey. And, I’m not making a pencil reference here.” She said that as if this reporter and she shared some inside joke. “Now it was obvious to me that the team was a tribute to the Cleveland Browns, and perhaps that was meant to be kept hidden. I wanted to make it obvious to everyone. We have incorporated orange into the color scheme, Paul [Brown]’s favorite color. [We have] Also added a unique ‘v’-neck to shoulder stripe that mimics the Cleveland helmet pattern. We then took a look at the logo and mascot. What kind of Brown should the mascot be: baked bean, bear, seal, brownie? The results of a Beantown poll said that they wanted the Irish.”
“The Jackson Hole Gophers got a bit more of a makeover. The team is not moving, but the name and logo get a major overhaul. Now that the town owns the majority share of the team instead of it being owned by a put-put golf franchise the popular consensus was that the team should be a reflection of the town of Jackson Hole. This was an easy decision, and required no poll. Since Jackson Hole is nestled in a valley overlooked by the Grand Teton mountains, it was decided that the name and look of the team would pay tribute to the natural landscape. We were sensitive to the Grand Tetons literal translation, so we went with the Twin Titans. One logo has double ‘T’s with the right most ‘T’ standing taller than the left. Another logo has a more tradition Greek or mythological iconography with a pair of similar Titans facing each other. Again, the image of the Titan on the right stands taller. The talk from the sports bars in Jackson Hole is that the town loves the new name logos and overall look of the team. I think that they feel a real ownership of it [the team] now.” When prompted, Ms. Plotske addressed the color scheme of the team. “We had a couple of choices for the colors. We wanted to go with sunrise or sunset over the mountains. We played with yellow for sunrise and orange and purple for sunset. Either way, we kept the cool shadowy color, the steely blue-green that the Gophers had. So, in a way that was nice. We kept a bit of the old and lots of the new. We went with the more cheery, and let’s face it, less clashing colors: yellow of the sunrise, green of the valley, and shadow blue. “
It was noted that both uniforms were false vests. They have sleeves that match the color of the t-shirt and contrast the colors on the chest. In the case of the Twin Titans. The ‘vest’ stripes continue down the sleeves which will break the illusion that the jersey is a sleeveless vest.
When asked if either of the other Gloucester affiliates would be getting a makeover, or even the Fishermen themselves, Ms. Plotske replied, “We are taking a serious look at Waimalu Nene. In fact, that was our first assignment. However, the Twin Titans became a priority, and them some other work came to us that just didn’t let us finish that project. I would also love to have a go at the Narragansett Seagulls just to make the uniforms pop a little more. But, as for the Gloucester team, there is no plan to make any changes. ”
Finally, when asked if she had any other work lined up around the league, Ms. Plotske replied, “We did the Kentucky uniforms this year. I think that they will really stand out in the league and get noticed. Some people might not like it because it isn’t traditional in the slightest, but PEBA is all about breaking old traditions, so I think it will really catch on. We also have some more work lined up with the Kentucky franchise, but those details are pending.”
