The Apple Falls
Reno, NV: Reno Zephyrs general manager Scott Maynor; eats, breaths and defecates baseball. One look at his office and it is easy to see that the great game of baseball is clearly a passion for the fifty-one year old. The walls are paneled in Ash and his desk was made from recycled baseball bats. The carpeting looks like grass and there is even an American flag on the wall made from baseball bats.
Maynor is entering his 11th season at the helm for Reno and despite a very bad showing in 2021 the owner (Maximillion Poppington) expresses endless confidence in his abilities. To date the Zephyrs GM can boast of 4 straight playoff appearances which is nothing to sneeze at but, as he sits in his office with a view of the field at Washoe Field, you get the sense that his greatest pride comes in the form of a 15 year old high school first baseman.
Caden Maynor stands 6 feet tall and weighs 180 lbs. He bats from the right side and appears to have inherited his father’s passion for the game. His coaches at Wilson Classical Academy all rave about his work ethic and coachability.
The Bruins manager Carlos Barnes is a close friend of the Zephyrs GM but, he has made it perfectly clear to the reporters who are tracking the young Maynor’s progress that no favoritism will be given. “In this game, you have to earn what you get. When winning is your primary goal, you won’t last very long by playing subpar players,” Barnes said in the Wilson Classical Academy High School News.
Caden declined to talk to reporters but issued a statement saying he was proud to be a Bruin and will focus on his studies as well as baseball throughout his 4 years of high school.
Caden will bat 7th in the line-up and play first base. The Bruins have 6 high school post season appearances and 1 championship trophy but have not made it to the playoffs in the last 5 seasons. One proud father is hoping that a right-handed slugging first baseman can help change that.
Some scouts have already started to give projections for the 15 year old Maynor. Despite never appearing in a single high school game, he is believed to have plus power potential and a well above average batting eye. His defense is an area that needs improvement and he has the speed of a three-toed sloth. Overall, early projections have him as a solid prospect but unlikely to develop into a superstar.
