Season Opener a Bummer For the Underground
4/3/2013: London, England – The 2013 PEBA season began for the London Underground yesterday with their home opener against the Gloucester Fishermen. The Fishermen took a 7-3 victory in the game.
22-year-old SP Francisco “Yogi” Robles was given the ball by manager Sergio Manetti for the Opening Day start and did not disappoint. Outside of one mistake in the 5th inning to LF Gregory Arnold on a 1-1 count that was turned around for a 407’ 2-run HR, Robles pitched a great game. Robles went five innings, giving up eight hits and three runs while striking out six and walking none.
Manetti was impressed with the performance. “We were very happy with Robles today. For a young 22-year-old pitcher to go out there on Opening Day and walk no one is very impressive. He made one mistake to Arnold but we’re sure he will learn from it and become a better pitcher.”
The same could not be said for reliever Aaron Hobbs. Hobbs, who was brought in to start the 7th inning, allowed the first five runners to reach base, walking SS Kurt Thornton, giving up another 2-run HR to Arnold, then back-to-back hits and another walk. A 2-run single by Rex Groves finished the scoring in the 7th and Hobbs line was complete: 2/3 IP, four runs, four hits, two walks, one strikeout and 37 pitches thrown, only 17 for strikes.
When asked about his performance after the game, Hobbs simply said, “I stunk. I had no control out there and could not find the plate. It happens, but I will be back. I want coach to put me back out there as soon as possible.” Underground fans might not agree, as they booed Hobbs off the mound after his performance.
Stud CF Orlando Germán came as advertised. He went 3-for-4 to lead the offensive attack. 1B Michizane Kouki smacked a 3-run HR in the 2nd that got the Underground out to a quick 3-0 lead. Kouki was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a run scored.
