Crystal Lake, IL – The rumor mill is buzzing in Crystal Lake, and it’s not about the Sandgnats’ latest playoff performance. Sources have begun to speculate about the personal life of Sandgnats manager Steve Hott, with whispers suggesting that the former PEBA pitcher may be planning a high-profile engagement to none other than Madeline Maes’ (former NCAA champion basketball player) and sister of the former Bakersfield star pitcher Neil Maes (and current manager of the Scottish single A, affiliate, Govan Shipbuilders), a name that has suddenly come into the spotlight with the public wondering if Neil will ever be voted into the PEBA Hall of Fame.
While Hott is known for his leadership of the Sandgnats and his fiery personality on the field, his off-field life has rarely attracted this much positive attention. However, it seems his rumored relationship with the sister of Neil Maes, the retired star pitcher for the Bakersfield Bears, could be about to change that.
Unconfirmed Sources Spark Engagement Talk
The speculation began after reports surfaced of Hott and Maes being spotted again together over the past few months. Sources close to the two have remained tight-lipped, but an anonymous source claimed to have overheard a conversation that suggests Hott is planning to propose soon. Rumors are that the two once dated when Neil and Steve were both teammates for the Bears.
“Steve and Neil’s sister have been very close for quite some time now,” per former Bakersfield pitcher Fred Womack. “I can’t say much, but there’s definitely something serious between them.”
While neither Hott nor Maes have publicly addressed the rumors, the potential for a family connection between two of the Sovereign League’s most prominent figures has captivated the attention of fans and media alike.
Hott Remains Tight-Lipped
When asked about the rumors during a press conference, Hott, known for his candid and often unfiltered statements, chose not to comment on his personal life. “I’m just focused on the team right now,” Hott said, deflecting questions with his usual quick wit. “The only thing I’m engaged in right now is making sure we win the championship.”
This has only fueled further speculation, with many wondering if Hott’s refusal to address the rumors signals that there might be some truth behind them. His well-known focus on his coaching career and the Sandgnats’ postseason ambitions has never been diverted by personal matters before for quite a few years now, making any suggestion of a relationship with Maes seem surprising.
While some fans have embraced the idea of Hott’s rumored engagement, others are skeptical and see the news as nothing more than baseless gossip. “We’ve got a championship to win, not time for rumors,” said one Sandgnats supporter. “Let’s focus on baseball and leave the personal lives out of it.”
However, others have begun to joke about the potential relationship, seeing it as a possible storybook narrative that could add extra drama to the already intense PEBA playoff season.
Whether or not the rumors about Steve Hott’s personal life are true, one thing is certain: the drama surrounding the Sandgnats extends far beyond the diamond, and as the postseason heats up, it’s anyone’s guess what surprises may be in store.
I can hear wedding bells!
