Varela Razzle-Dazzles with No-Hitter
Monday, July 21st , 2042
The Wagga Wagga Crows relied on no-hit stuff from starter Ángel Varela to defeat the Sunshine Coast Crocodile Hunters, 3-0, at Steve Irwin Stadium.
"It's quite a thrill," Varela told the media afterward. "This is a top-notch league. A no-hitter against any team in the league is something special. I can't believe I did it."
To get his name logged in the Intercontinental Baseball Coalition records, he stopped Sunshine Coast cold and hitless, surrendering 3 walks and fanning 3 of the 29 batters he faced.
Wagga Wagga manager Ronnie Russell was in a jovial mode after the game, kidding with reporters that Varela "made managing easy today."
"I didn't have hardly any decisions to make like I usually do," he said. "I didn't even have to come up with a pinch hitter."
Varela has taken the mound for 2 relief appearances this season, nailing down 1 save while notching a 2-2 record with a 2.81 ERA. The Wagga Wagga reliever has limited opposing batters to a .120 batting average.
