University of Queensland Upended by Curtin University, 2-1
|
Curtin University Cockatoos starter Damon Hopewell hurled his team past the University of Queensland Koalas, 2-1. Norm Oeltjen, now 2-0, was credited with the win in 1.2 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 2 and walking 1. Glen Bagshaw sewed up the save, his 8th.
The Koalas had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Cockatoos going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 21-year old right fielder Keiran Lumby came to the plate. Lumby hit a solo home run on a 1-2 fastball from University of Queensland hurler Charles Bowden. It was Lumby's 9th home run of the year.
"I play this game for myself and my family, but of course it's always nice when we can win," said Lumby.
Curtin University is last in the Pacific League Down Under Division with a record of 19-25.
