Niihama-shi turned a good effort from starter Dave López into a win over the Okinawa Shisa at Shisa Stadium II. The final score was 2-1. In 7.2 innings, López surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run. Getting the save was Curt Merrill, his 33rd.
Niihama-shi needed the clutch hitting of Pablo Garza to seal the deal. The designated hitter swatted a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Ghosts on top, 2-0. For the game, Garza had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"We just didn't score enough runs to win," said Okinawa manager Yoriyoshi Tanaka.
The third-place Ghosts hiked their record to 74-58.
