The Niihama-shi Ghosts beat the Madison Malts, 5-4. Niihama-shi pitcher and Houston, Texas, native Wesley Carter led the way. Carter, now 4-4, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 8, walking 1, and allowing 4 runs. Curt Merrill earned the save for Niihama-shi, his 32nd of the year.
Joseph Oulton had a big grand slam home run for the Ghosts in the bottom of the first inning. With Niihama-shi trailing 1-0 and the bases loaded, he sized up a changeup from 27-year old right-handed pitcher Iemitsu Kato and punished it. The result was his 1st home run of the season, which put the Ghosts on top, 4-1.
In postgame comments to the Niihama-shi Herald, Oulton said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
Niihama-shi is in third place in the Sovereign League Rising Sun with a record of 72-56.
