The West Virginia Sherpas got a superb performance from third baseman Bill Thornton, but the Marshall McConaugheys still won the game, 7-3. Thornton went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Marshall reliever Chris Welsh got the win, raising his record to 3-0. Mark Hughes was tagged with the loss. Ed Nelson earned save number 11 this season.

António Montés hit a run-scoring double off Mark Hughes in the bottom of the fifth, which put the McConaugheys in front, 4-3. In addition to the double, Montés had 1 single, while going 2 for 4.

Said West Virginia manager Raúl Vega: "They did a lot of things right. We did a lot of things wrong."

The third-place McConaugheys go to 31-19.
