The UAB Dragons had to overcome a good performance from Minnesota pitcher Kent Sowder to claim a 2-1 win at Lucky Rodents Ballpark. Sowder went 5 innings and allowed no runs. Sam Brown claimed the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 3.1 innings. His record stands at 1-0. Roberto Gómez closed it out for his 2nd save.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Russ Latham? The 21-year old center fielder Latham stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put UAB up, 2-1. For the game, he was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.
Latham said his team "played with focus."
UAB now sits at 15-27, while Minnesota falls to 18-24.
