UAB took on Illinois in front of a lively crowd.

The UAB Dragons got a strong performance from pitcher Roger Bryant, who stymied the Illinois offense en route to a win, 4-1, at Alabama-Birmingham Grounds. José Ybarra earned the save for UAB, his 2nd.

UAB designated hitter Rick Sykes contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. With two down, he hit a fastball to center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 18th hit of the season and put the Dragons ahead, 3-1.

"You can't take yourself too seriously," Bryant told the UAB Today. "But at the end of the day, we do play to win ballgames."

The Dragons, at 5-15, sit in 9th place in the American Heartland Conference.
