Purdue Astronauts pitcher Eric Saunders was in top form, leading his team past the Pittsburgh Cathedrals, 3-1. Saunders, now 1-0, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 2 hits, while striking out 1, walking 0, and allowing no runs. The save was credited to Greg Nance, his 1st.
George Ortíz took Pittsburgh hurler Alejandro Martínez deep in the bottom of the fourth. His solo home run put the Astronauts on top, 1-0. In all, Ortíz had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4.
"It's nice to get the results when you're feeling good and throwing the ball well," said Saunders after the game.
