Bakersfield second baseman Joe Riley helped his team beat the Niihama-shi Ghosts, 9-2. Riley, who finished 3rd in the IL in slugging percentage with .578 in 2039, went 2 for 3 for the Bears. Jorge Gutiérrez, the winner, is now 1-1. He struck out 5 and walked 0 over 6 innings, while allowing 2 runs on 5 hits. Juan Guerrero, who finished 2nd in the IL in strikeouts with 205 in 2033, earned the save for Bakersfield.
Boyd Nelson helped his team take an early lead with a 2-run single. It came in the first inning, making the score 3-0, Bears.
"We took a roundhouse punch to the chin," said losing manager Nobuhito Hasegawa.
The win makes Bakersfield 34-79.
