The Asmara Modernists defeated the Addis Ababa Rifters, 4-3, at Tagliero Stadium. Asmara third baseman Mario Mendoza had a superb performance. He was 2 for 3 with a home run and a triple. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. The Rifters, now 27-37, have lost 6 straight.

The Modernists got an important contribution from right fielder Walt Koch, who in the bottom of the fourth knocked a 1-2 cutter to right for a solo home run. It was his 5th home run of the season and put the Modernists ahead, 4-2.

"We were the better team," crowed Koch.
