The Asmara Modernists picked up a win at Tagliero Stadium, knocking off the Port Sudan Tycoons, 4-1. Starting pitcher Tony Fernández played a key role in the triumph. Don West, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 2nd save. Asmara sits at 3-1 in the early going.

The Tycoons had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Modernists going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 19-year old third baseman Jon Thomas came to the plate. Thomas hit a 2-run home run on a 2-1 changeup from Port Sudan hurler Robinson Acosta. It was Thomas's 2nd home run of the year.

Thomas said afterward that he was glad to contribute to the win.
