Could Jesus Garcia Replace Martin Cantin as Alleghenies’ Closer?
WEST VIRGINIA — Last week, The West Virginia Alleghenies acquired Charleston Statesmen 30-year-old closer, Jesus Garcia for 23-year-old Brandon Meade and Minor Leaguer Tom Hill. The Alleghenies did not waste any time and sent the team sent a contract extension to the All-Star closer. Few days after, the Alleghenies and Garcia agreed to a contract extension. Garcia signed a 3-year deal, $14 mil/per (player option in year 3). 2019 was a year to forget for Garcia. In 42 save opportunities, Garcia blew 6 and in 75 innings pitched, Garcia posted a 4.08 ERA.
“First of all, I would like to thank the West Virginia Alleghenies for believing in me. Last year, was definitely a bad year for me as a closer. I know I can do way better than that. I will do my very best to not let my new teammates down.” Garcia said to the press.
The team was very open in the off season where they expressed their needs in the bullpen. There is no question that with the acquisition of Garcia solidifies the pen, but what does this trade mean for the current Alleghenies closer, Martin Cantin who signed a contract extension last month?
“I haven’t made any decision, it’s too early to tell. Martin (Cantin) had done a tremendous job for us closing games last season and that is the reason why we extended his contract. I wouldn’t be fair for both players if I play favorites right now. ” GM Imasa said to press.
The reports tried to reach Martin Cantin, but he chose not to comment on this report.
