Cornish Takes Over Reins in London
12/13/2007: London, UK – The London Underground, a member of the Imperial League of the Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance (PEBA), will take the field next spring under new owner / Manager Harold Cornish, a veteran baseball executive with a winning way both on and off the field.
Cornish, 55, said he will not only bring a great deal of experience to his organization, but he will add energy and a get-after-it type attitude. He also spoke of his plans for the next few months for the team, including the much-debated and discussed player payroll; his business philosophy; his desire to get to know the other league owners and, last but not least, his passion for baseball.
"Cornish is going to bring a lot of discipline," said middle reliever Luis Mora, who posted a 6-5 record last season for the Underground. “The team met him last night and he has a lot of emotion. He's going to be extremely strict about being on time, disciplined." Cornish stated, “I'm proud to be a baseball manager, and I'm thrilled about the opportunity to manage the London Underground and work with the community as well as the players.
"I have a lot of plans for Underground baseball," Cornish said. "I expect to make Wembley Stadium a fun place to go for family entertainment throughout the baseball season." Though on the job less than a week, the new management team is already planning a wide range of special events designed to make Underground baseball a focal point for the community. "Baseball is fun," Cornish said, "and we want everyone in London to be part of that fun.
"I can promise people that we're going to have a great time at every game," said Cornish, who hopes to visit "virtually every" business in London prior to the season opener. "Baseball is good business for the business community. We want and need the enthusiastic support of London businesses. In turn, we will strive to provide the fans with an exciting brand of baseball.”
In closing, Cornish reiterated that he was thrilled to be a part of PEBA and was looking forward to meeting his fellow managers socially and in battle across the field.
