Codgers clinch playoff berth
For the first time since the 2030 season, the Palm Springs Codgers are headed to the playoffs. This will be the Codgers 8th playoff appearance in the teams 33-year history.
A clearly intoxicated owner of Palm Springs, Hopkins Reginald Bunner IV, was seen in his suite ripping lines of a mystery white powder and showering his guests with champaign. “I am so proud of this team and myself,” slurred Bunner. “I hired a relatively unknown General Manager on the cheap and it paid off, and I hope this party never ends,” said Bunner.
The Codgers got hot in September going 19-9 to clinch the second wildcard spot in the Sovereign League and a tough match up with the Toyama Wind Dancers who won five of seven vs Palm Springs in the regular season.
“They’ve had our number all season,” said GM Rob Sullivan. “However, we have not played them since May and our team looks significantly different now than it did then.” And the team will again look different when they meet in the postseason as the Codgers have lost both of their starting catchers for the duration of the season and their top offensive threat, OF Angel Franco is listed as day to day to start the series with a bruised knee.
“Losing both Claudio Perez and Freddy Morales in the last two weeks of the season is a serious blow to our offense. We will need our pitching staff to really step up to give us a shot at winning this series,” said Sullivan.
A flurry of moves near the All Star break propelled the team to their best season in a decade finishing with 93 wins good for second place in the Desert Hills division.
The Codgers are expected to start their young, up and coming ace Shigochiyo Yamaguchi in game one. If Yamaguchi can continue his mastery against the Wind Dancers the Codgers may stand a chance of making the series competitive. The young righthander went 1-0 in two starts with a 0.69 ERA in 13 innings. It’s expected their other other young righthander James McCoy will draw game two and potentially a pivotal game five should the series last that long.
“We pushed our chips all-in at the deadline to clinch this playoff spot,” added Sullivan. “But it is bittersweet to fight and claw to get here only to have Claudio and Freddy out injured and Angel beat up, they are all big reasons why we made the playoffs – I feel for those guys, especially Claudio and Freddy who have no chance of playing again this season,” said Sullivan.
It is rumored Angel Franco took the owners private jet to Columbia for stem cell injections in his knee to get back on the field for the series. “Our General Manager has tasked me to do everything possible to get Angel back on the field,” said Palm Springs fixer and Sullivan’s man servant Arthur Fleck.
Fleck has a history of pulling off the impossible at Sullivan’s request. This past offseason he was able to get the notoriously stingy owner of the Codgers to raise the teams budget by $18MM.
“I have all the faith in the world in Arthur, he has some connections in Columbia who work in advanced science and chemistry that have pulled off miracles for our players in the past,” said Sullivan.
“We are wounded, and backed into a corner but we are dangerous,” he added. “The nice thing about having a younger team is they do not realize what they are up against, we have nothing to lose at this point and the pressure lies with the other team – three shutouts from our young staff and we can win,” commented Sullivan.
Either way, the Codgers and GM Rob Sullivan reached their goal in 2.5 seasons after Sullivan took over. Do they have enough left to make this series competitive? We find out on Tuesday October 2nd at 12:05AM PT or 3:05am EST.
