Coaching Changes in the Valley Isle Part I
The Scottish Claymores held a press conference from The Castle this past week highlighting some changes to the Maui Mahi-Mahi coaching staff. Former PEBA players German Hernandez (C, SS/WV) and Neil Maes (P, BAK) will be filling the roles of Manager and Pitching coach this upcoming season. Both players are up for consideration for the PEBA Hall of Fame, and have been known as leaders in the clubhouse throughout their careers.
“German is a winner. He not only leads by example, but he is vocal when needed as well. He’s known for his power, but he ‘s won a few awards for his defense as well. We’re ecstatic about adding him to our organization, and are excited to see him work with our young players. We’re also excited to see his development as a manager, and expect great things from him in the future.” – GM Sean Bain
Hernandez had been looking for the right opportunity to get back into the PEBA in one role or another, but felt now was the right time to start that journey.
“It just felt right with this situation. I like bringing the best out of others, and I have the opportunity to work with some really talented young people here. I’ll enjoy the Maui weather while I can, but I’m really looking forward to trying this managing deal. I feel like I’ve been managing behind the plate for most of my career, but now I have a different seat. I’m here to watch, help mold these young guys, and just be there to help them get through the tough times. I really think it’s key to highlight what is/was working well, and help get these guys through those times that are a grind. They’ll be better off when they get those opportunities to move up, and in life in general.” – Maui Manager German Hernandez
The Mahi-Mahi offense on paper looks to be an area of strength this season, while the pitching staff is still working on being sorted out. Top prospect 3B Julio Luna (#6 overall) leads the team with 2B Jose Silva, and will be looking to add some more pieces in the upcoming draft.
“This isn’t a knock on the other coaches I’ve worked with, but I’m really excited to get to work with German Hernandez. He was one of the top power hitters in his playing career, and I think he can help me reach my potential.” – 3B Julio Luna
