Re: Back in the Rio Grande

#193 Post by Matt »

When the dust settled and we got into the off season, the numerous arbitration awards had us a little squeezed financially. We had to part ways with LF Lopez, who we signed last off season to the big deal. We shopped him around a number of times, and finally on Dec 5 we ship Lopez to Brooklyn for 31 yr old SP Mike Williams, who makes slightly less than half as much. This should help solidify the rotation, where we struggled after our top two starters last season. This might free up a small amount of cash to let us chase another free agent. But we'll wait and see what the Winter Meetings have to offer.

When the pre season arrived, we adjusted our player development budget and scouting budget down just a bit, and used the savings to chase a couple free agents. On Feb 18th we land Korean closer Pyon, a 28 yr old righthander who entered the league as an international free agent. We had such success with Ruan, the Korean lefty we signed right after taking over, that we want to see if we can catch lightning in a bottle twice. 4 yrs at 210k per.

On Feb 19th we land outfielder Lorenzo Leon, 32 yr old who swings from the left side. For Leon, it's a homecoming, as he spent his first 6 seasons with RGV, before departing after the 77 season. He's a solid on base type, .379 career obp, with average power. It's a one year deal with an option that vests at 490 PA.

Opening Day 1983 coming next.

Previewing the 1983 Ocelots

Rotation....Jones (22-4 3.02) and Nicoletti (19-2 2.69) return, of course. Mike Williams joins the staff, we had to give up All Star LF Lopez to get him, but Williams, 31 yrs old, has worked 250+ innings and won 16+ games in 6 of the last 8 seasons. He gives us a workhorse, which Jones and Nicoletti are not. They are both likely to barely eclipse 200 innings. Luis Garcia (13-6 3.95), returns as the #4 starter. He showed signs of putting things together in the 2nd half last season, and hopefully in his 3rd season he can develop into the solid starter we think he can be. Rounding out the rotation will be John Becker(11-5 3.66). Becker seems to be somewhat fragile, but is solid when healthy.

The bullpen returns essentially the same from last season as Pyon starts the year on the DL. In a week or so we will have to decide how to handle getting him a spot. In the meantime, the lefties are Patterson, Schurman and Ruan, with Sanchez, Gonzales, Gutierrez and Miller from the right side.

Brousse (.309, 16 HR, 82 rbi) returns as the franchise catcher, but Olvera will back him up this season. Garcia is back in AAA.

Suarez (.284, 31, 94) returns at 1b

Fa (.300, 13, 91) returns at 2b

Caldwell (.318, 8, 51) returns at SS

Cordova (.265, 9, 36) opens the season at 3b. Becerra (.287, 8, 62) should see plenty of playing time as well.

Martinez (.278, 1, 32) is super utility who can play 1b, 2b, and the OF.

Gonzalez (.227, 6, 31) is our other super utility who can play 2b, 3b and the outfield.

Leon (.274, 6, 33) is the new LF.

Flores (.320, 20, 92) returns in CF.

Chen (.290, 11, 84) returns in RF, but will spend the first two weeks on the DL. Rookie Fajardo, as well as Martinez and Gonzalez, should see time in RF until Chen returns.

Jewell (.314, 22, 90) returns as the DH.
