Absolutely solo. Neither my wife nor daughter are interested in games about zombies and plaguesYou wouldn't happen to be playing it that way, would you, Mike?

You are going to love it, Mike. I got to play last weekend with a few friends, and I came away feeling it might be my single favorite game to date. Solo play is outstanding, but if you can scrounge up a few friends for a semi-regular campaign, it's going to really shine.Mike Dunn wrote:I just purchased Gloomhaven from a guy who spent three hours punching its counters and setting up the broken token organizer, then decided it wasn’t for him. So its basically mint. I got the game, the organizer and the removable sticker set for $210 including shipping. Not a real discount, but it saved me hours of tedious punching. He packed it up carefully and shipped it two-day.
So now its in my grubby little paws. Hoping to find time this weekend to play the first scenario and learn the game!
I'm afraid I don't. But I'm familiar with the by reputation. APBA Pro Baseball (1951) and Strat-O-Matic Baseball (1962) are two titans in the baseball simulation board gaming world. I'd bet I'd have a blast playing them.Bulldozers wrote:All this talk about board games made me wonder ...
Do any of you play baseball board games? Like APBA or Stratomatic?
I play APBA, have done so since 1962, and am currently playing all the Detroit Tiger seasons from 1950 to 1968.
It may not be as exciting as some of the games y'all describe below, but it's still more interesting than whatever football game is being played this weekend.
Thanks for the tips about games I'm unfamiliar with, John. I took a look at the Highlights 2045 game--robots? Too much for me. The reason I play APBA is so I can relive the golden years of baseball, not imagine a frightening future of robots! The Čapek brothers were right: robots are scary stuff!John wrote: For a lighter experience, consider Baseball Highlights: 2045 (2015). It's an abstraction of baseball - a baseball-themed deck-builder, if you will - but it's zippy to play and fairly entertaining. There's an app version for iPhone and Android, if you're so inclined to go that route.
It's the bottom of the ninth inning. The game is tied. It's down to the home team to score one run to win it all. Unfortunately, the home team is staring down the league's best closer.
A dice and card game for two players, Bottom of the 9th brings all the excitement of the final three outs of a baseball game into a compact 5-20 minute game session. With variable player strengths, bluffing/deduction, and die-rolling, only the pitcher knows what's coming and the batter needs to keep his eyes peeled. Bottom of the 9th is played over the course of three outs, or four hits (for one run scored) — whichever occurs first.
Bottom of the 9th includes tons of variable player powers, myriad customizable line-ups, the possibility of two added expansion packs, and rules for advanced league and solo play to keep gamers wanting to play ball time and time again.
Now there's an idea rich in possibilities!Mike Dunn wrote:Another fun little board game is Bottom of the 9th, which is only about playing, you guessed it, the bottom of the 9th!
I confess I don't know that one. I take it that instead of shaking the dice, you must stir them.Leones wrote:Don't forget that non-existent classic puzzle rpg: 'No Mr Bond I Expect You to Die'

Go get 'em, Mike! Keep us informed on how your campaign progresses.Mike Dunn wrote:Rainy Saturday, fighting a cold. What better time to break out Gloomhaven for the first time! Click to enlarge.
Didn't get far, still learning.
I did get this league going eventually, although I've had a hard time retaining regulars due to various life issues:Badgers wrote:Formula D is my most frustrating game right now. I really want to get a league going with regulars and standings, but I can't seem to find a time that works for people. Probably need to start small and then see if we can grow it.
Very cool! Formula D is a surprisingly fun press-your-luck game. I'm not even a racing fan, and I dig it. I dig your previews and recaps, too!Badgers wrote:Since this thread is always worth a good bump:
