Re: Browns owner consults homeless man, drafts Manziel
Manziel was a hugely gifted college player, but I'm not sure his game will translate into the NFL particularly well even if he has his act together. It could, but that kind of quarterback cuts both ways. If nothing else, he's a big injury risk. Add to that that fact that he was understood at the beginning to be emotionally young, shall we say, and you've got a guy that you really just ought let Oakland draft.

I would love to meet you for coffee sometime to discuss Dennis Ready.Evas wrote:I'm with you on hoping he can pull it together.Ocelots wrote:The kid has issues. You sort of want to feel sorry for him. He is after all just a kid. I still don't think he will ever make it in the NFL, but for his sake I hope he can find a way to live his life in some manner that doesn't resemble a train wreck. You would hate to see him end up being where Ryan Leaf has been the last decade or so.Evas wrote:To beat everyone to the inevitable punch:

Hopefully he gets straightened out. He is on the verge of blowing his chance.
But as bad as he's been, Ryan Leaf doesn't seem like the right comparison to me. Leaf was a pretty bad dude. JM is a nice guy by all accounts, he's just an idiot. He seems like he wildly underestimated how difficult the league would be and how much dedication, work and life style change it would take.
I can accept it he doesn't make it. I just hope it's because he isn't good enough, not because he's a f--- up. I wouldn't feel too bad about the Browns drafting a guy who stinks. But a guy who never comes close because of bad decisions bothers me immensely.
As frustrating as it would be, those sorts of situations would be a hell of a wrinkle to add in to OOTP...

Why do I feel like there's a Johnny Manzel/Lindsay Lohan reality show in the future?

So many stories here. The biggest takeaways- Johnny's gone, and the Browns are even bad at cheating.

I don't understand why teams cant work out a player(if he chooses) before the combines?
What is the reasoning behind this rule?

Best comment on the various Mariota articles -
"Being the Browns, this can only end with Marcus Mariota being found homeless under an overpass, babbling semi-coherently about "88 Trips Z Spring" while nursing a 40 of Olde English."

I thought of you, Ron, when I saw this one:

It's very rare that I make any prediction on a QB going to the pros, but in all seriousness I cannot imagine a competent front office taking Manziel over Bridgewater. IMHO, the only thing that will keep Bridgewater from being an elite player sometime in the next year or three will be injury.
I hope Manziel gets his life in order and all that, but I'll be quite surprised if he ever is better than an average football player for any extended period of time. (and, yeah, I've been wrong before)

Josh McCown? Maybe the Browns should just consider moving to the wishbone offense?

He is in all likelihood a backup guy.Ocelots wrote:Josh McCown? Maybe the Browns should just consider moving to the wishbone offense?
There just aren't a lot of great options out there right now. I'm glad they went with him instead of Hoyer. He will at least understand his role and won't have delusions of being an NFL starter like Hoyer.

And won't have other types of delusions like the non-sober Johnny Clipboard.Evas wrote:He will at least understand his role and won't have delusions of being an NFL starter like Hoyer.

After Chip trades his left nut for Mariota the Browns can have Foles for a 2nd.

I was going to say something along those lines. I think Philly trades up with Oakland, giving the always rebuilding Raiders a boatload of picks, then Cleveland gets Foles in a deal with Philly. Would be win win win for everyone involved. If it happens, Browns need to do the deal in a way that still lets them get a play maker on offense this draft. Otherwise whats the point of getting a qb.Ghosts wrote:After Chip trades his left nut for Mariota the Browns can have Foles for a 2nd.

One mock draft I saw (King, I think) suggested the 2015 1st, 2016 1st and Lesean McCoy to move up to Oakland's pick. That deal sounds like something Oakland would do since it has a flashy, well known skill player (their bread and butter). From the Eagles standpoint it sounds too good to be true: McCoy was one of the worst backs in the league by advanced metrics last year - and he has a huge cap hit, Sproles/Polk is a perfectly fine stop gap tandem, the depth of this RB class is being highly lauded atm... but if Oakland is willing to go full Oakland then I won't complain.Ocelots wrote:I was going to say something along those lines.
