OOTP 9 impressions

#1 Post by John »

I did download my copy but an extremely busy schedule has precluded me from installing it yet. With the draft set for Saturday, the All-Star game coming up next Saturday and the ongoing league finance/settings reconfiguration ongoing, I might not get a chance to look the new version over for a little bit. The suspense is killing me!

Want to help satisfy my curiosity about the new version? Post your impressions of OOTP 9 here. Anything and everything you notice is fair game. I’d love to hear what you think!

I definately enjoy the new scouting system, although that is one question I have about the process of moving peba to ootp9 the new scout not longer gets ratings in offense, defense, pitching instead he gets majors, minors, international, and amatuer ratings...how will our scouts be assigned those?

Still working through a lot of the gameplay, but I really like the new logo and look that it has, makes it much cleaner...

And I can see the scoreboard when I play the games...which will be good when we do live broadcast with the ball moving and sounds coming from the game...

overall, loving it

I am ordering soon I think. Until then, I am just waiting. Paul, can you import a 2007 game into 9? If so, you could see how it handles the scout ratings.

My understanding is that you set your scouting budget during the pre-season. It's during that time that you determine how much you want to spend on scouting the majors, minors, international players and amateurs. Once the season starts you're not allowed to adjust the totals; you have to wait until the next off-season to do that.

I also believe that only your head scout gets brought over when you covert a 2007/8 league; the other scouts disappear. Can you verify this, Paul?

I haven't looked at my copy yet, but a beta tester stated this was the policy on scouts explicitly when asked the question on the forums.

yep, I imported my PEBA file into ootp 9 and only your head scout comes across, and it looks like in order to change the scout ratings over like this...scouting hitting = scout major leagues

scouting hitting potential = scouting amatuers

scouting pitching = scouting minor leagues

scouting pitching potential = international scouting

but i only checked two scouts but the pattern was the same....

That's an intriguing way of doing things. I expect many of us will be strategically firing our head scouts before the switch.

I started a ABA league and had a ton of Joe Unknowns show up in the middle of a game I was playing out. Currently searching the forum for help on this.

I like it so far, but wish I could still get those quick scouting reports. Beyond that I still need to put some time in!

The Hardball Times is probably my favorite baseball website. Their insight into the game is simply amazing.

Now they've gone and published a review of OOTP 9, and guess what? They love it! Not that it's any surprise to those of us who already have fallen in love with this incredible game.

I think the real important thing that will come out of this is a huge exposure spike for OOTP. The Hardball Times boasts a great number of readers, many of whom possess great baseball minds and a love of the game but aren't aware of OOTP at all. This review should prompt some of them to give the game a try. That means more development dollars flowing in, as well as a number of quality potential owners entering the pool (since some of these newcomers will inevitably want to test the online waters).

I read the hardball times a lot, they are a little too scientific for me at times but overall are an interesting read. Its great news that they gave a positive review for OOTP.

Overall, 9 feels a lot like a more polished and better organized 2007/8, some very nice new features but keeping the same good basis. I don't see why the league should have a problem with it at all.

Definitely THT can get a bit overly scientific at times, but I agree that they're usually a great read. And I also agree that OOTP 9 will be a great platform for our league. I do want to give it a little time to make sure some of the bugs get ironed out. For instance, there's word that a nasty bug crept in which made all players' L/R splits disappear when importing an OOTP 8 league into version 9. That would not be good! So we'll give it just a bit for that kind of thing to get cleared up and then dive right in.

Yeah, I was afraid I got bit by that bug after I spent hours configuring my stadiums in my fantasy league. Luckily, it doesn't seem to have affected me. I do agree though that there is definitely no rush to make the switch, seeing as version 9 isn't so radical an improvement that we are missing out on a lot by not converting.

First look, nice upgrades but a couple of minor issues. Scouting budget (though I prolly need to read the online manual more thoroughly to see why I can't increase it above a certain level), and contract issues in the MLB startup. I haven't spent a lot of time though.

I'm planning on looking at the draft thing later. I think I am still going to work on my own utility, because I want a feature where I can select certain positions I want filled, and a maximum of picks at a certain position...that way I can list 50 pitchers but once I get 2, no more pitchers. I think that happened to Kentucky this draft - got a lot more pitchers than he expected?
