The Hitmen's Hitting Champion

#1 Post by Hitmen »

Rubén Cruz, the hard-hitting first baseman for the New Jersey Hitmen, concluded his regular season with Imperial League titles in several categories. Consistently the top player for his own team, the Hitmen faithful continue to sing his praises in hopes of a League MVP award along with a PEBA championship.

Joseph Gianlucca, one of his most fervent supporters, agrees that Cruz should be considered for the top honor. “I sit behind first base at every home game, and I’ve seen everything he’s done this year. There’s no one else in the league that’s even close to this guys performance. Day in, day out, he’s led this team, and there’s no doubt he’s going to take them all the way to the championship!”

The self-deprecating Cruz is less enthusiastic about his chances. “We win as a team, and we lose as a team. I don’t think there are any real stars here – we simply work hard together and any success we have as individuals simply reflects on our team as a whole.”

Although Cruz is eligible for arbitration after the season, rumors circulating around the Hitmen front office suggest that the team will offer the 25-year-old a long term deal before the 2008 season.

Cruz missed out on the Imperial League’s Triple Crown by 7 home runs. He led the league with a .323 batting average and 115 RBIs. He also led the IL in 7 other offensive categories, and fielded a .994 percentage while splitting time between first base and designated hitter.

Cruz is going to be right up there for the Royal Raker Award along with Pat Lilly and Kuemon Kiyomizu. I certainly hope the Hitmen hold onto him; you always want to see teams keep their best players.
