Bayou Brief: Edwards Struggles, Trendsetters Faithful Glad

By Jack Coostow, Brief on the Street reporter

6/1/2008 – The Trendsetters just completed a three game series against the Rodriguez Cup-holding Hitmen.  The Trendsetters took two out of three as the Hitmen barely avoided being swept when the bullpen allowed 8 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Cal Edwards now wears a Hitmen jersey, signing with last year’s champ for a much lower contract than asked for from New Orleans.  His initial greed, which led to his departure, sent the front office on a search for bats and so far the offense is much better than last year.  Edwards has not had a bad year so far, but in the last series Trendsetter pitching held him to 1 hit in 14 at bats (the one hit was a three run homerun).

Brief on the Street —

"He's a tool.  There are no two ways about it.  New Orleans is better off without him, and if I am at a game where he is playing then you better believe I will be booing him and yelling my head off.” – John Joseph, waiter

"Edwards?  Never heard of him… we have a baseball team in New Orleans?  Hmmm… never liked baseball much… nope, I am a Saints fan through and through…  Go Saints!  Sure wish we could get the NHL here though… that would be better than football… the only thing that could be better would be if professional curling came here…”  Juanita Rodriguez, alleged commissioner of an online knitting league

"Haha… did you see Edwards in the last series… what a loser!  Good riddance.  New Orleans don't need nobody like him around, and that’s a fact, you can quote me in that fangled-floppity paper thing you write in.  Tell 'em I was real good.”  Billy, token Bayou dweller

"Truth was, we never could have held on to him with our budget.  Nope only way out of the hole we were in was to trade.  And trade we did.  Seriously, all the best to Edwards, especially if he keeps hitting like he has versus Trendsetter pitching.”  Tom Jones, singer
