Former PEBA Pitcher Fred Sorley isn’t a household name, but that didn’t stop the Scottish Claymores from reaching out to interview him for their vacant Pitching Coach opening in Rookie ball Khartoum. Sorley’s pitching career was highlighted with a short three season stint in PEBA, with his best season being in 2032 with the Madison Malts. His leadership qualities helped him extend his career for 11 professional seasons.

Those same qualities were intriguing to GM Sean Bain.

“Fred is a leader and has always made the people around him better. Those qualities kept him in the game as a player, and through some contacts in the league we heard he was ready to give coaching a try. He’s long been considered an extra coach in the clubhouse, but now he has the title.”

Since retiring as a player, Sorley has coached his alma mater Forest Hills the last few seasons and led them to the New York State High School Baseball finals 2 of the last 3 seasons.

“I’ve enjoyed giving back to the school that helped me reach my professional baseball dreams. In a way, they’ve helped me twice now by helping open this door into coaching. I’ll always be thankful for our Athletic Director for giving me this opportunity and letting me run with it. Our coaching staff will be in good hands with the group we have, and now I get to work with guys that are trying to make it like I once was.”

Sorley has been described as a controlling personality, but one of the top pitching teachers around. His development of young arms in Queens has led to scholarship opportunities for players that prior to his arrival hadn’t been viewed as collegiate arms. He focuses on keeping the ball on the ground and using his defense behind him to get outs.

Sorley joins a completely revamped Khartoum staff with new manager Mito Nii and Hitting Coach Takeshi Hayashi.
