OPEN MIC FOILS COQUI EXECUTIVE AS OWNER PASSES

San Juan (AP) – An era has ended in Puerto Rico as San Juan Coqui owner Myron Beardsall died unexpectedly after a short illness. Beardsall’s 13 year stint as owner of the former Rio Grande Valley-based team produced the franchise’s only PEBA championship (2031) and only 100+ win season (2033). That 2033 season happened to be the last winning season of Beardsall’s tenure, and as he aged, Beardsall developed a reputation as an increasingly miserly owner. 

That tight checkbook had caused friction between Beardsall and Coqui Team President Jay Wells, which helps explain an embarrassing moment at the press conference hastily called to announce Beardsall’s death. At the end of the press conference, when Wells mistakenly thought the microphone had been shut off, he blurted, “Well, that’s it for the old skinflint.” That inadvertent window into the long-rumored rift between Wells and Beardsall was the second most informative news of an otherwise short and content-free press conference – no concrete details were shared about the circumstances of Beardsall’s death, or who would be the new Coqui owner.

Before his embarrassing gaffe, Wells read a short and simple written statement: “Thank you all for coming here on what is become a very difficult day for our organization. I regret to break the news to you that our long-time owner, Myron Beardsall, has died unexpectedly after a very short illness. Out of privacy for Mr. Beardsall’s friends and family, and in accordance with Mr. Beardsall’s wishes, we will not be answering any questions about Mr. Beardsall’s recent illness. We will have an announcement at a later date about Mr. Beardsall’s successor as owner. In accordance with the terms of his will, the will documents will be read in a private gathering of his friends and family. No date has been set for that will reading, as it is our understanding that some of Mr. Beardsall’s beneficiaries have just found out about his death and are in the process of making travel arrangements. Thank you, and please keep Mr. Beardsall and his loved ones in your prayers, if you pray.”

In an exclusive, the Pre-Eminent has learned that Beardsall’s will has bequeathed the Coqui franchise to Margherita Vittoria Savoia, a young Italian woman. At press time, we at the Pre-Eminent were trying to learn more about Miss Savoia.
