Cyclones Make First Splash in Free Agency

December 15, 2011: Omaha, NE – The Omaha Cyclones wasted no time making their first off-season acquisition when they announced the signing of 32-year-old defensive wizard Ramón Arroyo to a three-year contract worth $15 million.  It was rumored that the contract was agreed upon hours after Arroyo filed for free agency.  While the deal was not official until this afternoon, Cyclones management apparently approached Ramón early and Arroyo to fortify Cyclones' infieldwith nearly double what Arroyo’s agent was looking for.

“This was our guy,” stated Jason Warnke, General Manager of the club.  “We knew going in to this off-season that the skill set that Ramón brings to the table is unique.  He can play multiple infield positions effectively, and adds additional and much needed power to our offense.  After speaking with ownership, we decided that five million a year is a small price to pay for that rare power bat in the middle of the infield.”

Arroyo signs with Omaha after playing the last three seasons in the PEBA with the Gloucester Fisherman.  In his last season with the team, Arroyo smacked 26 homeruns and 24 doubles in 153 games.  While he only hit .229, he was able to drive in 78 runs and was a defensive cornerstone at third base and shortstop for the Fisherman.

“I am excited for the change of scenery,” said Arroyo.  “I truly appreciate what they brought to the table.  I feel very comfortable with the team that Jason Warnke and the owners are trying to configure.  I can’t wait to get started this spring!”

Rumors are circulating among PEBA pundits that this is just the first signing of what may be an aggressive dip into the free agent market this winter by Omaha.  These rumors are a complete contradiction to the cost cutting that Warnke and the Cyclones were performing throughout the 2011 season.  In fact, the team was able to cut their salary exposure almost in half through recent arbitration hearings, trades and the Arroyo signing.  All actions pointed toward building a budget through better fiscal management.  However, the recent moves and rumors lead some to think otherwise.

As the weeks continue, we will find out which of these two directions management will be taking the Omaha Cyclones.
