The Rice Puddings withstood an impressive performance by Seton Hall catcher Burt Tolley to defeat the Rampage, 5-4, at Rampage Stadium. Tolley was 2 for 4 with a home run and a double, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Rice reliever Gary Graham picked up the win to move to 1-0. Jim Pierson suffered the loss. Alfonso Salsa earned save number 13 this season.

Roberto Carbajal, the 19-year old center fielder , had a direct impact on the outcome. Carbajal contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning to put Rice up, 5-4.

"I'm proud of the way we took care of business and got the 'W' today," Carbajal told the Rice Daily News. "Whatever it takes."

The second-place Puddings lifted their record to 25-20.
