2012 Planetary Extreme Championship: Manchester vs. Tempe
Written by American Baseball Persepective

Manchester Maulers (96-66) vs. Tempe Knights (109-53)

Manchester Maulers       VS.  Tempe Knights

2012 Planetary Extreme Championship at a Glance

  • Both Tempe and Manchester are making their first PEC appearance.  This is the first time two teams are making their PEC debuts since 2008, when the New Orleans Trendsetters faced the Crystal Lake Sandgnats.
  • Manchester is the first Pan-Atlantic division team to appear in the PEC since the New Jersey Hitmen won the Rodriguez Cup in the PEBA’s inaugural season of 2007.
  • Tempe has a decided advantage when it comes to PEC experience.  Six Knights have hoisted the Rodriguez Cup previously: Michael Kelly and Tu-an Sima with the Florida Featherheads in 2011, Christos Douglass and Yoshii Ikeda with the Charleston Statesmen in 2010, Conan McCullough with the New Orleans Trendsetters in 2008, and Ben Truscott with the New Jersey Hitmen in 2007.  Only two Maulers have won it all: Mike Vaughn (2011) and Luis Peña (2007).
  • Regardless of the outcome, a first-time PEC victor will be crowned this year.  The PEBA has never had a repeat winner of the Rodriguez Cup.
  • Games 1 & 3 will begin at 8:22 p.m. ET after opening ceremonies, which include player and staff introductions and tributes to our nation’s men and women of the armed services, have concluded.  An honor guard will assist the unfurling of a 100’ American flag before Game 1 at Whiten Field.  Fighter jets from Luke Air Force Base will do a fly-over before the start of Game 3 at Knights Stadium.

Tempe Knights Playoff Notes

  • The Knights went the distance in the Sovereign League Division Series before outlasting the Crystal Lake Sandgnats, then took the Sovereign League Alliance Tournament against the Aurora Borealis in five games.
  • Seven of Tempe’s 10 post-season victories have come by two runs or less.
  • Tempe’s 51 runs scored, 102 hits and 12 home runs lead all playoff teams.
  • Markus “Fireworks” Hancock has started more games (4) than any other pitcher during the playoffs.  He has rewarded the team’s faith with a 2-0 record, a 2.42 ERA and 0.62 WHIP, and two complete games (including one shutout).  Fireworks has struck out 27 batters in 26 post-season innings while walking just one.
  • Tempe will be without their best hitter.  The pain from a lingering back injury became too much for Roberto Rodríguez to play through.  The team placed him on the DL on Friday.  His replacement on the playoff roster has not yet been named.

Manchester Maulers Playoff Notes

  • The Maulers were taken to a deciding Game 5 in the Imperial League Division Series by the Charleston Statesmen.  Manchester had considerably less difficulty in their Imperial League Alliance Tournament sweep of the Arlington Bureaucrats.
  • Six of Manchester’s seven post-season victories have come by two runs or less.
  • Manchester’s 3 runs/game allowed average leads all post-season teams.
  • Maulers hitters have scuffled this post-season, hitting only .208 with a .583 OPS.  Those marks are all-time lows for teams appearing in the PEC.
  • Manchester’s roster has a heavy Aurora influence.  There are eight former Borealis on the 2012 PEC Manchester Mauler squad: Francesco “Guns” Amati, Juan Jose Benítez, Ryan Dawson, Arturo García, Todd Hanna, Patrick “Cosmos” Hunter, Kuemon Kiyomizu and Nelson Ortíz.

Manchester leads Tempe 3 games to 2

Game 1: Manchester Wins 4-0
Game 2: Manchester Wins 6-0
Game 3: Manchester Wins 5-4 (10)
Game 4: Tempe Wins 3-0
Game 5: Tempe Wins 10-4

In Search of Platoon Hitters: LRS 2012
Written by Lupin Cliff Hangers
Bob Rachitowski, Baseball Spotlight
October 27, 2012

Traditionally in baseball, the lineup of batters has been adjusted, with batters hitting from different sides of the plate, depending on the hand (left or right) with which the pitcher throws.  Platooning involves batting one batter against right-handed pitchers and a different batter at the same position against left-handed pitchers.  This article is an attempt at summarizing how platooning might have been used in the LRS.

The scope of the report covers players on major league rosters as of October 22, 2012.  Batters on major league rosters who have not had a plate appearance have been excluded.  Batters with plate appearances against pitchers of only one hand have also been excluded.  These include Hiroshi Ueno (who had only one plate appearance against a left-handed pitcher and none against right-handed pitchers), Munoto Sugimoto and Ichizo Ageda (who had only five and four plate appearances, respectively, against right-handed pitchers and none versus left-handed pitchers).

The batters covered had a total of 61,915 PA, with 45,031 against right-handers and 16,884 against left-handers.  This amounts to 2.667 PA against right-handers for every one against a left hander, or 72.73% of the total plate appearances against right-handed pitchers.  Right-handed batters had 28,667 PA versus right-handed pitchers and 11,601 PA versus left-handed pitchers, or 71.19% of their PA against righties.  Left-handed batters had 12,759 PA versus right-handed pitchers and 4,269 PA versus left-handed pitchers, or 74.93% of their PA against right-handed pitchers.  Switch hitters had 3,605 PA against right-handed pitchers and 1,014 PA against left-handed pitchers, or 78.05% of their PA against right-handed pitchers.  Surprisingly, this means left-handed batters saw more right-handed pitchers percentage-wise than right-handed hitters.

Collectively, left-handed hitters accumulated a .286 AVG, .367 OBP, .454 SLG and .821 OPS against right-handed pitchers.  Left-handed batters hit for a .274 AVG, .327 OBP, .416 SLG and .744 OPS against left-handed pitchers.  Measured by OPS, this indicates a 1.35% increase against right-handers.

Right-handed batters hit for a .261 AVG, .322 OBP, .397 SLG, and .719 OPS versus right-handed pitchers.  Right-handed batters marked up a .265 AVG, .341 OBP, .409 SLG, and .750 OPS versus left-handed pitchers.  This indicates a 4.31% increase versus left-handers measured by OPS.

Switch hitters hit for a .252 AVG, .312 OBP, .361 SLG, and .673 OPS versus right-handed pitchers.  Switch hitters hit for a .236 AVG, .295 OBP, .345 SLG, and .640 OPS against left-handed pitchers.  This indicates a 5.15% increase versus right-handers measured by OPS.

Are certain hitters better suited as platoon hitters – in other words, more effective if utilized primarily on one side of the plate rather than the other?  Let’s use some graphs to get a general idea of how league hitters perform versus pitching hand.

Tenpinners Under New Management
Written by Reno Tenpinners
10/27/2012: Reno, NV – The Reno Tenpinners have recently announced that Scott Maynor will be assuming the role of team president and general manager.  The 40-year-old Cleveland, Ohio native certainly has his work cut out for him.  In addition to inheriting a team that has never finished higher than fourth place, Reno also sports a minor league system that ranks 17th out of 24 by Baseball America.

"What I have to do first is gather as much information as I can," Mr. Maynor said in a phone interview.  "I need to learn who we are, how we do things and what we do.  Then I need to make a fair and thorough evaluation of our system and personnel."

The top priority for Mr. Maynor has to be infusing talented prospects into the system in hopes of building a championship team from within.  Financially, the Tenpinners managed to get into the black for the first time ever this year, and the new management has no interest in overspending on the free agent market.  The Tenpinners are a team that lost 107 games this season and 104 games in 2011.  That trend may have to continue for the short term until the front office can get some of their minor league fruit to ripen.

Mr. Maynor is currently in the process of putting together a comprehensive report on all levels of the organization.  He will also be working on a player development program to give the organization a leg up on turning their prospects into big league contributors.

One of the few bright spots in the minor league system for the Tenpinners is last season’s 1st round pick António Morales.  The man affectionately known as “Trashmaster” has had his struggles since being drafted.  Morales posted a .554 OPS at SS-A, .664 OPS at Hi-A and .632 OPS at AA.  Still, the new management is intrigued with his makeup and potential.  “Morales is definitely a player I will be watching closely,” Mr. Maynor said.  “I believe he can develop into a real impact player for the Tenpinners.”

The Reno Tenpinners offer a significant challenge for Mr. Maynor.  The best plan of attack for the new GM would be the three Ps: Prudence, Patience and Providence.

First Time Champions will Hoist Rodriguez Cup

2012_PEC_standings

10/19/2012: Tempe, AZ – The dust has settled from the Alliance Tournament and two teams are left standing.  The Manchester Maulers (96-66) will face the Tempe Knights (109-53) when the battle for the Rodriguez Cup begins on Saturday night.

player_4344player_1059Both teams came in as wildcards, but in no way should they be discounted, as they blew through the Alliance Tournament with ease.  Manchester swept division foe Arlington in four games, while Tempe got some sweet revenge from last year’s SLAT by defeating Aurora in five games.  It is a first-time experience for both teams as they fight for their right to hold the Rodriguez Cup as the Planetary Extreme Champions.

The Imperial League-champion Manchester Maulers finished second in the Pan-Atlantic division, four games behind the Arlington Bureaucrats.  The Maulers finished strong, going 36-20 in the final two months of the season and securing the final playoff spot in the IL.

Led by the young superstar left fielder Ed Williams (.316 AVG, 30 HR, 108 RBI) and first baseman Kikugoro Memento (.285 AVG, 29 HR, 111 RBI), the potent offense has plenty of power in the middle of the lineup to match the speed of 2B Theodore Boyd (30 SB), DH Shimpei Adachi (35 SB) and CF Arturo García (34 SB).  The Maulers led the IL in stolen bases.

A steady rotation led by late-season acquisition Hamilton Cole, along with 16-game winners Luis Peña and Jesús González, will pose a formidable challenge to Tempe.  Setup man Nelson Ortíz (0.97 ERA 65 IP 63 K), a closer for most teams, has “dominance” written all over him.  He will clear a way for closer Augusto “Prince” León (3.12 ERA, 38 SV, 60.2 IP).

Neo-Tokyo Holds Off Kure, Clinches Playoff Spot
Written by Neo-Tokyo Akira

10/22/2012: Tokyo, Japan – It's been a long and bumpy road, but the Neo-Tokyo Akira have finally shed the label of perennial losers by securing their first ever playoff appearance.  Their epic season (at least in their history) culminated in many firsts.  Foremost was a 20-win improvement over last season’s 64-80 record.  That resulted in their best finish ever – 2nd place, a mere three games behind powerhouse Shin Seiki.

Team records were set in batting average, ERA and attendance, all while posting the second-lowest payroll in team history.  The front office's philosophy of rebuilding through the draft appears to be successful.

Manager Joey Barden heaped praise on his young players.  "It was a close call there at the end, but the kids went out and sealed the deal."  Indeed, upstart Kure gave NeTo a classic run for the money, finishing a mere game behind Neo-Tokyo.  "Give them credit.  The Arsenal fought through injuries and a 13-game losing streak and never gave up.  They'll have their shot again, but this is our time to celebrate."  And celebrate they did.

The Akira will have little time to enjoy the accomplishment, as Shin Seiki lies in wait.  The LRS playoffs begin October 24.  Neo-Tokyo was 8-16 Vs the Evas this year.  They will have to pull off a monumental upset if they have any intention of bringing the Neo Tokyo Cup back to it's namesake city.

An Ace Up the Sleeve
Written by Edo Battousai
By Saruwatari Tsuyoshi, Kyoto Shimbun News

October 22, 2012: Kyoto, Japan – Having accomplished the goal of capturing the Bright Blade Group pennant, the Battousai have gone to work putting together their post-season roster.  It is widely believed that Edo will deploy a four-man rotation to take advantage of their league-leading staff.  That would leave Takanibu “Decoy” Murata out in the cold, it would seem.  Curious about this, I set out to find out what Edo planned to do with their “Decoy”.

Edo manager Manabu Nagumo smiled like a fox in the henhouse when I asked him about the situation.  “We have some plans for Decoy in the post-season.  I cannot share all of it with you, but you can expect to see him playing a most unusual.  His abilities offer many opportunities to help the team.  The fans are going to be in for a pleasant surprise when the playoffs begin.  I think you’ll find Decoy will become a fan favorite very soon.”  He smiled again and had a sip of green tea.  Finishing his drink, he set the cup down, carefully placing the handle towards the sun as it rose through the window.  He drew a deep breath of the crisp morning air.  “Very refreshing, Saru; very refreshing.”

My interest piqued, I set off to learn more and find out what might be in the offing.  No sooner did I set foot on the field to observe batting practice than I spied 3B Yoshihiro Sato in the outfield, shagging fly balls.   Well, here was a story.  Sato played RF in four games this season.  Was he expecting to return to RF for the playoffs?  When asked, he would only smile and ask to be excused for practice.

Sato wasn’t talking, but his record speaks volumes.  He has been a member of two Neo-Tokyo Cup winners, (Shin Seiki – 2007, Fushigi Yugi – 2010).  Clearly, this is a player who understands how to win at the highest level and knows what is needed to capture the Cup.  Looks like Edo is getting ready for a serious title defense.
