Irony is no stranger to baseball.

Masamichi Hayashi was the 3rd overall pick of Havana’s first draft in 2021. His scouting report began with: “Hayashi has a good head on his shoulders.” His shoulders were not up to carrying good head. He tore his labrum and will be out 4-5 months, missing the 2024 season. So much for the shoulders.

The injury came when he made ran into the wall at Loggerdoggers Ballpark while playing for the Port-Au-Prince Bokors. “I was feeling for the wall but after the rain delay the outfield warning track was soft and I couldn’t tell if I was still on the grass or the dirt. Next thing I knew the wall was there.”

Hayashi was making good progress in Port-Au-Prince after a fine 2023 campaign that saw him put up an .843 OPS with 17 HR and 147 OPS+ at AA Gojira (now Nassau). He’ll be missed. He was gaining a reputation as a tough out with above average power.
