Re: Neat stuff sim thread PEBA 2023 Season
Thanks Guys!! And congrats to Ken for taking over the well cared for F-heads - Kevin was genius running that squad, and guiding them to the PEC. I think we've a fine new owner there - and he's putting out some pretty good podcasts (if you haven't heard), too.
We certainly had thought about winning again and what it would mean; what it would take, but with Shin Seiki and Crystal Lake being so good, not to mention the Bears and the up and coming Duluth and Codgers - and Toyama (OMG they played well this year - I thought they just might dethrone the Evil Evas), we figured it'd be someone elses turn. And the injuries. Losing Negrete and Gunner for the season so early and still making it to the postseason was lucky. But the one injury that I think might have derailed us was Britt. His being able to come back early in the Crystal Lake series I think was the difference.
Next season will certainly be interesting as the home grown core of the team, on the field, is all still under 30, save Nick Giles. Britt just turned 29.
It's the pitching that is aging, and with a big deal for 31-year old 'Tugboat' (by Opening Day) and soon to be 32 Mike Provost on the horizon, Lots of dinero will be sunk into the oldest part of the team - and that doesn't even get us to Bryant Burris, the oldest guy on the team at 36 and making $6.8M next year for the right to give us more heart attacks.
So I hope my owner is happy, seeing he asked me after last year to 'Build a dynasty'. He won't be happy about our 1B situation and our poor HR hitting - but clearly you can win without power... at the plate...
So time to think about 2024 and... dare I say... a four-peat? If last winter showed anything, we'll be looking to make the moves that will (hopefully) make us better. 'Gypsy' and Ferrell gone last offseason, who goes this year? Might it be a big name? With C Manny Castro just on the horizon and winning despite Negrete being hurt, maybe the former-Zephyr hits the road. Another thought is the outright release of Gunner MacGruder, who will miss all of 2024, then have a player option for 2025. If he's healthy, he'll no doubt use that option - and what will we have aside from a 32-year old pitcher? Either way, we're in for $33M and may get nothing. Then again, maybe he has a setback and retires, or... he is pretty greedy, maybe he thinks he'll get more $$$. I doubt that. We were so disappointed to lose him after trying for so many years to bring him into the fold.
All and All, it was a fabulous season for the PEBA - great races, young up and coming teams, young stars. I don't know what the offseason will bring for us - relocations, contraction, new rules, v17, but what I do know is this is the best darn group of guys and I'm proud to be a part of it!!! On to 2024!!!
